Whether it is a case of turf burn from football practice or a bug bite from playing outdoors, 9-year-old Nate knows what is coming when he greats his mom at the front door with his battle scars. He rolls his eyes but smiles as his mom, Shelly Holbrook, goes directly for the On-the-Go Remedy Stick.
The Plein De Vie, On-the-Go Remedy Stick, is the flagship product of Bellevue-based luxury organic skincare line created by Holbrook. The remedy stick is the first in a line of 13 new organic products for moms, babies and women on the go. The healing balm can be used to relieve and help heal bumps, bruises, scraps, cuts, rashes, chapped lips, mild eczema, diaper rash, dry skin and yes, even turf burn for rambunctious young boys.
The name Plein De Vie translates to Full of Life in French, a concept that Holbrook whole-heartidly embraces.
“I wanted to create a natural product line that would reach out to all women,” she explained. “When a women is pregnant she is literally full of life. Outside of pregnancy, when a women takes the time to stop in the midst of life’s chaos and take time to enjoy the beauty of everyday moments, she becomes more whole herself.”
As a former child-birth educator, laborer and postpartum doula, and owner of Spoiled Rotten Baby online gift boutique, Holbrook has spent a large chunk of her life surrounded by pregnancy, babies, motherhood and women.
With the continuing success of Spoiled Rotten Baby, Holbrook wanted to offer a high-end, organic skin-care line along with the luxury baby clothing and gifts found on her online boutique. She began searching for a high-end organic product line that would be beneficial to mothers-to-be, babies and for women postpartum. After doing some research, Holbrook came up short. She either found products that were considered high-end or organic, but never both.
Instead of giving up, she created her own line, using her knowledge and experience with aromatherapy and organic oils such as lavender and peppermint to create a skin-care line that combined both high-end luxury with organic ingredients. Last January, she hit the kitchen and began formulating recipes.
“I started looking for products for myself that weren’t so granola, but at the same time weren’t pumped full of chemicals. I quickly realized I could fill a void that was missing for women out there,” Holbrook explained.
Creating the On-the-Go Remedy Stick turned out to be a mix of trial and error with a dash of friends and a couple of glasses of good wine. After compiling some sample products, Holbrook invited her girlfriends over for wine and appetizers. Together, the friends sampled the different products Holbrook had crafted in her kitchen and gave her feedback.
One of the products was a diaper balm that Holbrook told her friends to dismiss because she had yet to master the product. Despite her suggestion, her friends tried the balm and loved not only the texture, but the product’s healing ability as well.
“I can’t even take full credit for inventing the On-the-Go Remedy Stick because it was really the result of the flowing of wine and good friends,” Holbrook joked, smiling at the memory.
The remedy stick is available for purchase on Spoiled Rotten Baby (www.myspoiledrottenbaby.com). Once the Plein De Vie Web site is up and running, three percent of all online sales will go towards Equality Now, a charity that helps fight for women’s rights around the world.
“I think giving back as you can is important and if I’m fortunate enough to have someone buy even one of my products then I’ve had success,” Holbrook said, adding, “I always felt that if I can’t give back with my time then I should give back in other ways. My life revolves around women, children and babies, so it made perfect sense to support an organization with the same outlook and focus.”
The remedy stick can be used for sensitive skin and contains no nut oils, according to Holbrook. The remedy stick consists of infused oils and German Chamomile, an ingredient known for its healing power and is often used in high-end diaper rash creams. The On-the-Go Remedy Stick ($12.99) is available online at Spoiled Rotten Baby and will be available for purchase on Amazon.com in the next several weeks. Holbrook is hard at work on her full of Plein De Vie products and hopes to come out with a new Skin Nourishing Sugar Wash soon.
