March 27 was the grand opening of Lincoln Square Cinema’s first IMAX theater starring the children’s animated film “Monsters vs Aliens.”
The movie was mainly about a woman named Susan, who is about to get married, when she gets hit by a strange meteor and grows to over 50 feet tall within minutes! Quickly she is labeled as a “monster,” and she is then sent off to a special top secret facility where the government confines all “monsters.” There is B.O.B., the oozing blob, Dr. Cockroach, the scientist who accidentally made himself half man, half cockroach, the Missing Link, who was an unfrozen fish thing who thinks he’s really cool, and finally, the largest monster of all, Insectosaurus, the scary but gentle giant insect.
Soon an alien threat to take over Earth forces the president and the government to turn to the monsters to save them in return for their freedom. Through the battles and struggles they face, Susan realizes who and what is really important to her.
What was really special about the movie was its 3D effects and IMAX viewing, which really made the movie come to life! It was so exciting to see the characters jumping off the screen at you, and the clarity was amazing.
Because of the 3D, it was much more memorable and captivating. In the beginning, a researcher is playing with a paddle-ball and the ball flies out into the audience’s faces making everyone scream and laugh. The first-class animation is most suitably viewed on the giant IMAX screen and is really gripping. It also made the action-packed film much more thrilling and dramatic.
“Monsters vs Aliens” was hilarious and I laughed throughout the movie, though I had hoped for more from the ending. However, I think Reese Witherspoon’s voice made her character, Susan, seem ideally sweet and nice.
Some of my favorite characters, who made me laugh the most, were the very dense and senseless President Hathaway, (played by Stephen Colbert who ran for U.S. president as a joke last year) who almost blew up the world several times during the film trying to make coffee, and the slimy, blue lab mishap, B.O.B., who was always confused because he didn’t have a brain.
The whole voice cast was outstanding. The dialogue was fun and clever, and it even had a few quite funny pop-culture references.
I thought that “Monsters vs Aliens” was worth seeing, primarily because of the 3D effects, but also because of how funny and entertaining it was. I have to admit the ending wasn’t perfect, but it was an engaging and entirely exciting film.
Overall, I would recommend seeing it if you really love 3D movies and fun kid’s action movies, and I think it would satisfy anyone out for a good time at the movies!
