For about 20 years, volunteers from a group of congregations in the Crossroads area of Bellevue have worked together to complete home and garden projects for their elderly and disabled neighbors on one Saturday each spring.
The Hearts and Hammers group is looking for new projects to tackle this May 19 in the 98004, 98005, 98006, 98007 or 98008 Zip codes.
To be considered, the homeowner must be elderly and/or disabled or unable to physically or financially do the work alone. It must be a project that can be completed by volunteers within a day and will not require permitting. Examples of previous projects include yard cleanups, fence repairs and small painting and repair jobs.
The Hearts and Hammers group is made up of volunteers from a group of Bellevue churches, a synagogue and a mosque that make up a Covenant community, which also worships, works together on other social action projects and celebrates together on occasion.
The congregations involved are St. Louise Catholic Church, Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Temple B’nai Torah, Islamic Center of the Eastside, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Cross of Christ Lutheran Church.
