Seattle Symphony musicians to play works by three Bellevue teens

Three Bellevue teens will have their chamber works premiered by Seattle Symphony musicians in a free performance on Monday, May 4, at 8 p.m. in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.

The three, Rio Bacon, Benjamin Davis and Jason Wang, are among 10 teens’ works chosen for the event.

Each of the three will briefly discuss the inspiration behind his or her piece before its performance, providing audiences with insight into the musical ideas of the next generation of composers. Seattle Symphony Music Director Gerard Schwarz will host the event.

The teens’ works are: Rio Bacon, “Finite Field of the Neverending Land,” Benjamin Davis, “Political Suite,” and

Jason Wang, “Spiritual.”

Benjamin, in his third year with The Young Composer’s Workshop, is currently in the eight grade at Lakeside School. He has won many awards for his compositions, and this year he was the second place national winner in the MTNA Student Composition Competition.

He also studies violin, viola, piano, and recently (over the objections of his parents) electric guitar. Benjamin’s other interests include chess, skiing and science fiction.

Rio currently he goes to Newport High School, does high jump for the school’s track and field team, and plays the cello in the school string orchestra. He started to play the cello in the 5th grade when he joined the school orchestra. Rio began playing the piano during his childhood in Japan. He has always had interest in composition, but did not begin to compose on a serious level until he was introduced to a composing software program by a friend. This was during his freshman year in high school, and this became one of his major hobbies.

Jason, a 17-year-old junior at Newport High School, is returning for his third year with the Young Composers Workshop. An active composer, he has entered various composition competitions.

In late 2008, Jason submitted a composition to the PTA Reflections program and received an Outstanding Interpretation award at the state level. He has also entered the Keith C. Birkenfeld Composition Competition in which he has won in the Sinfonia and Youth divisions in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Besides composing, Jason also plays piano and violin. As a pianist, he has received awards and recognition from the Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside, and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

As a violinist, he plays in his school’s Chamber Orchestra and has played in the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra for five years.

In his spare time, Jason enjoys martial arts, cross-country, and literature.
