Northwest University in Kirkland is hosting an exhibition of 20 landscapes in oil by Bellevue artist Suzanne DeCuir through May 6.
Twenty percent of the proceeds from the sales made during the exhibit will be donated to the Kindering Center in Bellevue.
“I know the work the Kindering Center does is so important,” DeCuir said. “I have an adult sister with Down Syndrome, and one of my neighbors here in Bellevue is a Kindering Center client.”
DeCuir had fragments in mind when she created these works. She started with the idea of synecdoche, a piece representing the whole, and from there turned her attention to urban and rural sites around the Northwest. Scattered driftwood like bleached bones, the curving rail of the upper deck of the ferry, and a glimpse of the triangular roof shapes of Safeco Field are enough to conjure up a feeling for each place.
Each spring and fall, Northwest University showcases the works of a Northwest painter. The paintings are displayed in the Donald H. Argue Health and Sciences Center overlooking Lake Washington.
“I’m very pleased to have the opportunity to exhibit my work in such a beautiful location,” DeCuir said. “With its stunning view of Lake Washington, the Argue Center is a wonderful setting for displaying paintings of Northwest places. “
DeCuir studied painting at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Many of her Northwest paintings are represented by Lucia Douglas Gallery in Bellingham.
DeCuir, a member of the Eastside Association of Fine Artists, enjoys teaching and is slated to give workshops this spring at Muséo Art Academy in Issaquah and the Daniel Smith art store in Seattle. She lives in Bellevue with her husband and three daughters.
Northwest University is located at 5520 108th Ave NE, Kirkland.
