Original Story

Another construction worker has fallen while working on the State Route 520 floating bridge, this one sustaining life-threatening injuries after a 60- to 70-foot drop this afternoon.

Bellevue Fire Lt. Rich Burke said CPR was being performed on the man when Bellevue Medic 2 arrived to transport him to Harborview Medical Center.

Firefighters removed a construction worker from a hollow concrete flotation support at the SR 520 bridge back in October, that man falling 15-20 feet, but sustaining non-life threatening injuries.

“We’ve had a couple falls out here, yes,” Burke said. “This is the worst.”

Washington State Department of Transportation spokesman Ian Sterling said the worker is employed by one of several contractors involved in the new SR 520 bridge project and had been working on the bridge’s east approach at the time of the fall.

“Obviously there will be an investigation into all of that,” Sterling said. “At this time, our hearts go out to the person who fell and his family, and we hope that he makes a recovery.”

He added he anticipates a work stoppage Friday, due to the severity of the worker’s injuries, but it was too early to say for certain as of Thursday night.
