For the last five years the Bellevue-based group A.W.E. (All Women Empowered) has worked to help foster better situations for women and children throughout the world.
The group has focused itself on creating educational and financial opportunities to reach their vision “to provide women and children with the resources to move beyond crisis and poverty toward stability and self-reliance.”
Through its efforts, A.W.E. has helped build schools in and drinking water wells in Sierra Leone, with help from other organizations including Clean Water Equals Life, and provide micro loans for women in Kenya and Cambodia.
“Many women have been abused, abandoned, widowed and impoverished, especially in developing and war-torn countries,” according to an A.W.E. spokeswoman. “Without job skills and financial resources they are hard-pressed to take care of their families and the community suffers. With our support they receive job training, micro loans, access to clean water, and schools. As they enter the workforce or start small businesses, they achieve self-sufficiency and are better able to care for and educate their children, thus braking the chain of poverty.”
On Saturday, A.W.E., is hosting its fifth annual celebration at Poppinjays Cafe in Bellevue starting at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets for the event at $25 and include hearty hors d’oeuvres, dessert, wine and entry to the silent auction.
