An alleged thief and his getaway vehicle became the first private vehicle to drive on the new State Route 520 bridge while leading police on a high speed chase on Feb. 25.
“The car got onto the new bridge, becoming the first private vehicle to drive partway over the new 520 bridge,” Bellevue Police spokesperson Seth Tyler said. “We’re lucky that no construction workers were hit by the car, because it is an active construction site.”
Shortly after 7 p.m., it was reported that a juvenile male, stole items from the Bellevue Square Burberry store and took off in a waiting getaway car. The alleged thief, the driver, 16, and four other passengers (all between 14 and 16 years of age), sped off. The group drove through Clyde Hill, where a Clyde Hill police officer spotted the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The suspects then tried to escape police by driving on the new SR-520 bridge, gaining access through a construction entrance.
“They probably thought they were getting onto the highway,” Tyler said.
With multiple police units giving chase, including the Clyde Hill, Bellevue and Seattle police departments, the Washington State Patrol and the Harbor Patrol, the suspected thief bailed out of the car and attempted to flee on foot. He was later discovered hiding in a pickup truck a mile westward on the bridge.
It was later discovered that there was a warrant out for the alleged thief’s arrest, so he has been booked into the King County Juvenile Dentention facility in Seattle. The Bellevue Police Department will be investigating this recent incident and will be forwarding possible charges to the King County Juvenile Prosecutor.
The five others in the vehicle in the vehicle were released to their parents.
