A 24-year-old Kent man undergoing mental health treatment at Overlake Medical Center last week is facing assault charges after he allegedly stabbed a fellow patient repeatedly in the head and broke a nurse’s nose when she tried to intervene.
Kanvir Grewal voluntarily checked himself into Overlake’s Behavioral Health Unit last Monday, June 15. Early the next morning, Grewal complained he couldn’t sleep and was given a sedative, according to court documents.
Grewal woke up a few hours later and went into the hallway, where he began pacing. Police report nurses then witnessed Grewal pull a fire alarm before rushing into another hallway and smashing out a plexiglass cover to a fire extinguisher.
He allegedly took a broken piece of plexiglass into the room next to the extinguisher and began stabbing a 65-year-old patient in his head, according to court documents, which add the two men did not know each other.
While the alleged victim attempted to cover himself from Grewal’s attacks, a police report states one nurse attempted to intervene, holding a garbage can to her chest for protection. Grewal is alleged to have struck the nurse, breaking and cutting her nose, before going back to attacking the other patient.
A 27-year-old patient, responding to the nurse’s screams, entered the room, where he allegedly found Grewal attempting to strangle his alleged victim with a towel. The 27-year-old patient reportedly grabbed one of Grewal’s arms and held him until security arrived.
The alleged victim was rushed to the emergency room, where his head was stapled to control the bleeding. Deep cuts were found on the back of his head, as well as his hands, arms and upper body. He also sustained a concussion and broken finger.
Grewal was booked into the King County Jail, and is now facing first- and second-degree assault charges in King County Superior Court.
