Attorney General to highlight community shredding event in Bellevue on Saturday

Attorney General Rob McKenna will make a guest appearance Saturday morning at a Secure Your ID Day shred event in Bellevue. The state’s top crusader for identity theft prevention will join consumers in destroying sensitive documents they no longer need.

McKenna lives in Bellevue.

The shredding event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Honda Auto Center of Bellevue,13291 SE 36th St. (off I-90 near Factoria). McKenna will be at the site from 9-9:45 a.m.

Secure Your ID Day is a campaign by the Better Business Bureau to raise awareness of the importance of safeguarding personal information. Consumers and small businesses are invited to bring up to three grocery bags of documents; no cardboard. Shredding will be provided by Cintas Document Management.

BBB representatives will be available to answer questions about identity theft and scams.

The Attorney General’s Office, which has made reducing identity theft in Washington a top priority, lists free shred events organized by financial institutions, police programs and others on its Web site at www.atg.wa.gov/shredathon.aspx. The site also includes a list of suggested items to shred, as well as guidelines on how long to keep records.
