Dale Hoffman, of Bellevue, has received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the The Pacific Northwest Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). He is an instructor at Bellevue College.
It is only the third time in the 30 year history of the PNW section awards that this honor has gone to a community college instructor.
Hoffman is scheduled to receive the award at the PNW MAA section meeting in Juneau, Ala., in June, and will be considered for national recognition by the MAA.
Hoffman has been a Bellevue College’s mathematics instructor for 28 years.
“Hoffman has distinguished himself as a mathematics instructor in many ways over the years,” said Robert Vines, Dean of the Science Division, “He designed a common final exam program for developmental math; been involved with the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since its origin in 1973, including two terms as president of the local chapter; helped create the Lebon Prize and Outstanding Calculus Student Award; published numerous articles, a calculus book and calculus software; designed the advanced mathematics program for Bellevue High School, and has twice received the University of Washington Computer Science and Engineering Inspirational Teacher Award.”
The Mathematical Association of America was founded in 1894 and is the largest professional society in the world that is devoted to undergraduate mathematics and mathematics education.
