The Bellevue City Council on Monday heard reports from three department directors who responded to the concerns of a resident about the potential impacts of stormwater runoff on Newcastle Beach Park. The park, located on Lake Washington in southwest Bellevue, is adjacent to the resident’s home.

One of the main concerns is that recent and future projects by the state Department of Transportation to improve Interstate 405, between Bellevue and Renton, could adversely impact the quality and quantity of water that drains from the highway. Some of that runoff drains to streams that run through Newcastle Beach Park before emptying into Lake Washington.

Because the city’s Transportation, Utilities and Parks directors dispute the conclusions reached by the resident about impacts, the council agreed with their recommendations to hire an independent consultant to review the data and collect additional information.

City officials plan to meet with the resident to select the consultant and determine exactly what work should be done. A report is expected to be completed within two to three months and cost no more than $10,000.
