Bellevue College launches Science Saturdays for middle-schoolers

Can rocks tell a story? Can you really find meteorites on the sidewalk? Students in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade will learn the answers to these and other compelling science questions at Bellevue College’s new “Science Saturdays” for local students.

Can rocks tell a story? Can you really find meteorites on the sidewalk?

Students in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade will learn the answers to these and other compelling science questions at Bellevue College’s new “Science Saturdays” for local students.

Science Saturdays are three hours of fun and challenging science activities, taught by Bellevue College (BC) Science Division faculty. Each afternoon is filled with “hands-on, minds-on” science projects designed to inspire young people to pursue learning in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Three sessions are scheduled for the coming months:

Jan. 22, 1-4 p.m.

Astronomy with BC astronomy and physics instructor Art Goss

Registration deadline: Jan. 19

Students will tour the solar system in the college’s advanced, digitally controlled Geer Planetarium, then hunt with magnets and microscopes for actual micro-meteorites on the BC campus.

Feb. 12, 1-4 p.m.

Geology with geology and environmental science instructors Gwyn Jones and Dr. Rob Viens

Registration deadline: Feb. 7

Students will discover how to “listen” to the stories rocks, sand, and minerals can tell about the history of the earth.

April 2, 1-4 p.m.

Chemistry with BC chemistry instructor Jacqui Drak

Registration deadline: March 28

Students will go beyond “boring home chemistry experiments” to put chemistry to the test in a safe environment.

Each session requires pre-registration and payment of a $50 registration fee per afternoon. Scholarships are available to qualifying students.

Registration materials and further information are available here.

Science Saturdays are a project of Bellevue College’s Science and Math Institute (SAMI).

SAMI was launched in 2008 to promote science and mathematics to students of all ages, both on the Bellevue College campus and in the surrounding community.

Its activities range from “Science to Go” programs that bring hands-on science to middle- and elementary-school classrooms, to internship opportunities for science students; an annual, one-week Summer Science Camp for 5th and 6th-graders; and an annual science fair for high school students.
