Ten-year-old Kamille Hoggan was honored on March 26 by the American Red Cross Serving King & Kitsap Counties as 2009 “Everyday Heroes.”

The Bellevue resident reached out to all her friends, family and classmates and asked them to support the Red Cross earthquake relief effort this past year. She designed a T-shirt and gave it to anyone who gave more than $20 to the cause.

Born in China in 1999, she was adopted by Kathy Hoggan of Bellevue from a Chinese orphanage. When she heard about last May’s earthquake in China, Kamille decided she needed to help.

“When Kamille saw the coverage of the China earthquake, the first thing she wanted to do was look at a map and figure out if that was right where she was born,” said Kathy. “She saw the devastation and heard about the children that were in the schools who were crushed and she thought – those could be my cousins.”

In addition to donations from friends and family, she received donations from all over the world from people she didn’t even know. Kamille’s initial goal was $2,000, but so far she has raised close to $4,500.

“It is really nice to have a daughter who thinks about other people and has a real sense of others in the community,” Kathy said.

Kamille is one of 11 heroes honored by the Red Cross.
