A 23-year-old Bellevue man drove his car off an overpass on Northeast 80th Street in Seattle, landing on southbound Interstate 5 after hitting a tree, according to Washington State Patrol.
At approximately 2 a.m. Tuesday morning, the driver of the vehicle may have been surprised by an oncoming vehicle and overreacted causing the car to plow through a small fence into a grassy embankment, WSP Trooper Julie Startup said. The car went airborne as it rode down the embankment before coming to a stop on the southbound Interstate 5.
“He came down from the hillside through the grass and was vaulted somewhat, and he basically came back down to earth in lane one,” she said.
WSP is looking at the possibility of drunk driving in the case. Troopers at the scene smelled alcohol on his breath. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries. There he was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI.
The crash caused serious damage to the car, knocking out all four tours and busting the rear window, but no one else was injured in the crash.
“There didn’t seem to be any witnesses,” Startup said. “It just looks like it was one of those times where no one else was around to be hit and everyone could just keep driving.”
