Bellevue Police Ofc. Andrew Hanke was charged with DUI this afternoon in Issaquah Municipal Court following a criminal investigation prompted after a traffic stop on I-90 by an on-duty officer who let him go rather than conduct an arrest on Nov. 20.

Hanke was pulled over that night by Bellevue Ofc. Doug Brennan, whose report filed with charging documents states he made the traffic stop in his marked patrol car after observing a Jeep Cherokee swerving eastbound on I-90.

“As I followed the vehicle, it donned on me that the vehicle was similar to Officer Hanke’s personal vehicle, which I had seen him driving in the parking garage in the past,” states Brennan in his report.

Brennan reported smelling odor on Hanke when he rolled his window down, and Hanke told him he’d been returning home from the Sideline Sports Bar in Bellevue. Hanke allegedly slurred his speech and had a “glazed look.”

“I was upset by my contact with Andy in this situation,” reported Brennan. “I told him he was drunk. I pointedly asked him, ‘what the f*** are you doing driving?’ I told him he was hammered. … I said to him that he has a drinking problem and he needed to get help.”

Rather than arrest Hanke, Brennan reports he called the officer’s wife to pick him up. During the course of the traffic stop, Brennan was also approached by a couple in another vehicle regarding a domestic situation, which was later turned over to the Washington State Patrol and Issaquah Police. Brennan reports Hanke’s wife arrived and drove her husband home in his vehicle while the officer waited with her vehicle until she returned to reclaim it. During this time, Brennan reports notifying two Bellevue Police lieutenants about Hanke’s drunk driving.

The department issued a statement this morning reporting Hanke was placed on paid administrative leave following the incident. His DUI charge stems a criminal investigation ordered by Bellevue Police Chief Linda Pillo, and the BPD is also conducting an internal investigation into Hanke’s conduct and also Brennan’s to determine if he used poor judgement or failed to perform his duties by not arresting Hanke. Brennan remains on active duty, according to police.

“I expect our officers to abide by our guiding principles of respect, accountability, integrity and service, and to abide by the laws of the state of Washington both on and off duty,” said Pillo in the release. “If these allegations are sustained, the involved officers will be held accountable for their actions.”

Following Hanke’s DUI charge, the Bellevue Police Department released Brennan’s report with numerous pages used for conducting a field sobriety page crossed over and blank.

Hanke landed in hot water last year for drunk and disorderly conduct at a Seattle Seahawks game in September. Disciplinary actions for that event included his removal from the bomb squad and a 30-day suspension.
