April showers may feel a little different hitting your face at 35 mph as your legs dangle 20 feet in the air. That’s all part of the experience people will get when they sign up for zip tours through the city of Bellevue’s newest parks project — weather will vary.

The city completed its zip line course at the South Bellevue Community Center’s Challenge Course last fall at a cost of $200,000. It will be managed by Northwest Teambuilding under a four-year contract. Faced with wet and chilly weather, the city is waiting until April 5 to open zip lining tours to the public.

Northwest Teambuilding owner Scott Andrews said about 40 people were invited out to test the zip tour in the fall. He’s been riding zip since 1983, and said not many cities across the country have embraced zip lines for their parks, but that number is growing. He’s now working on another course in Leavenworth.

“Urban zip lines are very rare,” said Andrews during a Tuesday media tour. “There are very few of them.”

There are six full lines to ride at various lengths, heights and speeds during the tours with a half line at the end. The cost is $44 for youth and $69 for adults and is available for children 9 years and up. Tours are anticipated to take up to 2 1/2 hours and come with harnesses, helmets, other gear and a release of liability form. The highest zip line is 80 feet.
