Bellevue police recently arrested a man they believe used a military uniform and a story about a fake engagement to steal a diamond ring worth $100,000 from a Bellevue jewelry store.
Officers had to travel to Vancouver, Washington for the arrest. The man is also accused of assaulting the jewelry store’s manager during his escape.
The robbery took place at around 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at Diamonds Inc. on Main Street. A man dressed in military fatigues entered the store and asked to see three-to-five diamond stones, according to a news release.
The man claimed that he was about to be “deployed” and had just gotten engaged. A store employee showed the man a 5.54 carat marquise diamond, worth hundreds of thousands, but the man grabbed the stone from the salesperson’s hand and ran from the store.
The store manager grabbed onto the suspect’s uniform as he was getting into a getaway vehicle. The manager was dragged down the street by the vehicle a short distance before the suspect punched the manager in the face, causing him to fall. The manager sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Although the suspect was able to flee the scene in the getaway vehicle, Bellevue crime scene investigators obtained fingerprints from the scene of the crime. They were processed by the Bellevue police crime lab, and, based on those fingerprints, detectives identified the suspect as a 26 year-old resident of Vancouver, Washington.
The suspect was not a member of the armed forces.
Armed with the information, investigators with the Bellevue Special Operations Group traveled to Vancouver, and, in working with the Vancouver Police Department, arrested the suspect without incident on April 13. The suspect was transported to King County Jail this week to face charges of second-degree robbery. Investigators continue to work to identify the accomplice, as well as to locate the missing diamond.
