The Bellevue Police Department has set a goal of hiring 20 new officers through its 2014 recruitment campaign, Protect this City, to replace those lost through retirement and promotions.
Entry-level hires must first pass written and physical tests, which can take several months to clear, as will as an in-depth background check. Afterward, a new hire will await a spot at the state police academy in Burien before returning for a field training program that takes several weeks.
Once all of those hurdles are cleared, a new officer will undergo a one-year probationary period. Veteran officers looking to join Bellevue’s ranks may require state accreditation, but the process is not as lengthy as for new officers, said Bellevue Police Ofc. Carla Iafrate.
“We’re really just trying to get up to speed with this first 20,” she said, adding there’s no deadline to apply. “It’s a long process, but a very rewarding career.”
