A Bellevue police cruiser struck and injured a pedestrian on 124th Avenue Southeast early in the morning on Dec. 6, police reported.

An officer traveling southbound in the 4000 block of 124th Avenue Southeast saw a person sitting or lying in the roadway. He reportedly attempted to avoid the person, but did hit him.

“Basically, he was lying in the street in the fetal position, passed out, wearing all black. And it was raining, so the officer unfortunately didn’t see him until the last minute,” Police spokesperson Seth Tyler told the Reporter.

The Officer immediately stopped, rendered aid, and requested a medic unit.

The pedestrian, a 21-year-old Bellevue man, complained of some hand pain was transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries to his arm and leg.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor with the pedestrian.

Collision investigators with the Bellevue Police Department were called to the scene to investigate. Investigators will attempt to interview the pedestrian and determine why he was in the roadway, as well as take measurements of the scene and look at the police vehicle’s data.

Although the subject’s injuries were minor, the department is investigating the incident thoroughly because it involved an officer.

“They’re treating it like it was any other serious accident,” Tyler said.
