Only a few hours of negotiations remain before a potential strike delays the start of Bellevue schools

Bellevue’s teachers and specialists meet at 5 p.m. Monday to learn whether a final round of negotiations has resulted in a tentative contract agreement or whether a strike begins Tuesday.

Negotiators for the Bellevue Education Association and the district met daily over the weekend, but, according to a BEA news release, made little headway in resolving three key issues:

• The district’s curriculum web instructional direction.

• Teacher pay

• Health insurance payment issues

Bellevue’s teachers, counselors, curriculum experts and other classroom specialists voted overwhelmingly in June to strike Sept. 2 if no contract agreement is reached. Last week members affirmed their commitment with a unanimous vote in support of BEA’s bargaining team. BEA offered a compromise package Saturday.

The member meeting begins at 5 p.m., and is not open to the public or the media. BEA President Michele Miller will come out of the meeting to update reporters shortly after teachers are told whether a tentative agreement has been reached.

The meeting is at Odle Middle School, 14401 N.E. 8th.
