Bellevue schools again do well in Newsweek survey

Bellevue high schools again ruled the list of top 100 public high schools in the nation by putting all five of their comprehensive high schools on an annual list compiled by Newsweek magazine.

It is the second year in a row that five Bellevue schools placed in the top 100. Actually, the schools placed in the top 80 with Interlake taking the 13th place, followed by the International School (20), Newport (45), Sammamish (56) and Bellevue (80).

The district routinely places at least three of its schools in the top 100.

The Newsweek survey uses the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests in 2009 divided by the number of graduating seniors.

Interlake likely moved ahead of the other Bellevue schools because of a new program there for gifted high school students.

The district’s schools have consistently scored high on the Newsweek list ever since former school superintendent Mike Riley pushed the idea that all students could succeed in taking Advance Placement courses. The number of students taking the tough courses jumped after his effort.

The Bellevue schools were the only ones in the state to make the top 100 list. Other Eastside schools to make the list of 1,622 were Redmond High School, 623; Mercer Island High School, 840; and Issaquah High School, 1,105.
