Bellevue resident Bryan C. Babcock, 34, was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Veterans’ Student Loan Relief Fund to help reduce a debt burden incurred while attending a for-profit education company.

Babcock, a former Marine, enrolled in a for-profit college when he returned to the U.S. His goal was to earn a degree in law enforcement. By then, he had finished his third year, drained his GI Bill benefits and was tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

The fund was created by Jerome Kohlberg, a World War II veteran, to help qualified active-duty military, veterans and family members who believe they have been misled by educational companies.
