Bellevue welcomes first baby of new year in western Washington

As the rest of Bellevue rang in the New Year, three-year-old Dharshini Mageshbabu welcomed her new baby brother into the world.

Dharshini’s mother and father, Deepa Kandasamypalanisamy and Magesh Babu Shanmugam, celebrated the birth of their baby boy, Mukunth Mageshbabu, as the clock struck 12:01 a.m., at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue.

Mukunth was officially named the first baby of the New Year to arrive in Western Washington.

Mukunth was born slightly ahead of schedule, with an expected due date of Jan. 10.

“The baby and mother are doing well,” Shanmugam said, after visiting the hospital for a post-delivery appointment.

According to Shanmugam, his wife began not feeling well on the night of Dec. 31 and later went into labor after arriving at the hospital.

“We are very happy,” he said.

Mukunth was born weighing a healthy 7 pounds and 12 ounces and measured 20 inches long. The name Mukunth was chosen by his sister and is the name of an Indian god.
