A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized Thursday evening after falling off a second-floor balcony, Bellevue police said.

The boy was taken to Overlake Hospital Medical Center after the fall from Hampton Green Apartments in the Overlake area at approximately 5 p.m., police said.

The fall happened while the boy’s parents, who moved to Bellevue from India only a three days previously, stepped out of the apartment temporarily.

The boy was lucky to experience a soft landing, police said. He landed on bark and landscaping, and he retained consciousness when members of the Redmond Fire Department arrived on scene.

A detective was assigned to the case to ensure that the boy was not being left alone at home on a regular basis, police said.
