The Kiwanis Kirkland Sunrisers will hold a fundraising breakfast at Applebee’s Restaurant on Bel-Red Road to help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus around the world. A $10 donation includes a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs, orange juice and coffee.

The event will be from 7:45-9:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.

Maternal and neonatal tetanus is found in 24 countries around the world and can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. It kills one baby every nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.

The condition is preventable by three doses of a 60-cent immunization that protects mothers, who then pass on the immunity to their future babies. T

Applebee’s is located at 13856 Bel-Red Road.
