City committing $2 million to KidsQuest

The Bellevue City Council is ready to approve $2 million in funding for KidsQuest, as the children’s museum continues a capital campaign for its new site downtown.

KidsQuest plans to relocate from Factoria into the former Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art in early 2016, and is working toward raising an additional $6.35 million to do so.

The council approved $500,000 in funding for KidsQuest in 2007, half being dedicated toward programming for low-income and disabled children and the other half — after a 2008 amendment — for refurbishing exhibits instead.

That 9-year agreement is close to expiring, said City Attorney Lori Riordan, and a new agreement for the $2 million in funding provides Bellevue the same level of oversight and interest in public benefits.

The money will be used for designing, engineering and constructing the new KidsQuest museum, and can’t be used for marketing or fundraising efforts.

KidsQuest will also continue to provide programming for low-income and disabled children under the agreement — the council is set to approve it on July 6 — amounting to $100,000 annually in free or reduced admissions over the next 20 years.
