The Jan. 13 Cultural Conversations will feature a screening of the documentary highlighting the life-changing impact of education for young girls in Haiti, Peru and Afghanistan. A discussion of the film will follow.

The screening and discussion will take place 1-3 p.m. at City Hall, 450 110th Ave. N.E., Room 1E-108; visitor parking is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Living in poverty, isolation and often in conflict-torn parts of the world, the girls featured in the documentary view education as a powerful tool to empower themselves, improve the condition of their families and potentially change their nations.

On hand to introduce the film and facilitate table conversations will be Rita Egrari from the Mona Foundation, an international charity working to eradicate global poverty through education; Annie Liu, with Charles Schwab, the film’s sponsor; and representatives from Eastside Pathways and the Bellevue School District. Resources will be available for attendees interested in supporting local or global education initiatives.

Cultural Conversations was launched in 2010 as a partnership between diverse women in the community and the city of Bellevue to better connect with their community and enhance their understanding of different cultural practices. Gatherings include women from around the world.

The events are free, refreshments are served and women of all ages, faiths and cultures are welcome to attend. To fully participate in the sharing, attendees are encouraged to make arrangements for childcare.
