The award-winning documentary “Darius Goes West” will be screened at Sammamish High School at two times Wednesday, Feb. 25.

The film deals with 9-year-old Darius Weems, who was born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic disorder that afflicts about 1 in every 3,500 boys. DMD weakens the muscles in the body and, as of today, there is no cure.

During the summer of 2005, Darius and 11 of his closest friends set out across the United States and documented

their road trip.

The film will be shown in the school’s PAC Theatre. The 1 p.m. showing will be free. A showing at 7 p.m. will cost $10 a person. Darius and his friends will be at both screenings.

Sammamish has held an annual fundraising walk for Aidan Leffler, son of Sammamish teacher Mitch Leffler and his wife, Mindy. Aidan was born with DMD. This year’s walk will be on May 16.

Last year, the fundraiser raised more than $45,000 for the Aidan Leffler Trust Fund, which will help pay for all the care and apparatuses he’ll need as he grows older and also go toward DMD research through Charley’s Fund.
