A distracted driver narrowly avoided injury on Oct. 6 after running a red light on Northeast Eighth Street at 112th Avenue Northeast and driving directly into oncoming traffic.

The accident was caught on video and distributed by the Bellevue Police, who said they are trying to use it as an example for drivers to pay attention on the road after a toddler was killed in an accident last week in which another driver didn’t adhere to traffic signals.

“This is another reminder for people to pay attention on the road… There’s a lot more cars out there, a lot more pedestrians,” said Bellevue Police spokesperson Seth Tyler. “We want to hammer home to drivers the consequences of not paying attention at intersections.”

The driver involved in the crash on Oct. 6 was heading eastbound on Northeast Eighth Street when he reportedly heard a beep from an electronic device and reached down to respond to it. When the driver looked up, he realized that the light had turned red, but was already halfway into the intersection.

A large pickup truck narrowly avoided the car, which was hit by two other vehicles. No one was seriously injured in the crash, and the driver was cited by police.

“This certainly could have been a lot worse,” said Tyler.

Bellevue Police are still investigating the Sept. 29 accident in which a toddler was hit and killed by a car that didn’t yield to oncoming traffic while turning left on a flashing yellow arrow. The investigation will likely take another month as police examine data from the cars and the drivers’ cell phones.
