Eastside Community Aid Thrift Shop approved 22 grants, money to two philanthropic organizations and three Lake Washington Technical College scholarships for 2010. 

The following 17 organizations received grant money:

• Youth Eastside Services (YES), $5,000 for their mental health services for children and their families

• Assistance League of the Eastside, $5,000 for their Operation School Bell providing new clothes for K-9th grade children

• SHARE/WHEEL, $5,000 for bus coupons to residents of Tent City on the Eastside

• KITH, $2,500 for bus tickets, clothing vouchers and shoes for homeless families

• Helping Hands for the Disabled, $5,000 toward a new van

• Sibling House Network, $5,000 to help buy a used van

• Domestic Violence, $5,000 for 30 days of “safe housing” for homeless families

• Coal Creek YMCA, $5,000 for summer programs for needy youth

• Home2Home, $5,000 to help with inventory control in their warehouse, drivers and vehicle maintenance

• Hopelink’s Northshore/Kirkland food bank, $5,000 for food only

• Eastside Legal Assistance Program, $5,000 for legal assistance for low income people

• Eastside Baby Corner, $5,000 for diapers, wipes and ointment for babies

• Casting for Recovery, $2,500 for cancer survivors outreach fishing program

• Sophia’s Way, $5,000 toward operating expenses to house homeless women

• Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center, $3,500 sponsor one horse for a year

• Habitat for Humanity, $5,000 to fund an Americorps worker to lead thirteen weeks of educational classes for prospective homeowners and provide materials for these classes

• Snoqualmie Valley Community Center & Adult Day Care Program, $3,012 to buy equipment for their computer lab and a media center projector

• Compassionate Friends, $1,400 to print, mail all their newsletters

• Juanita Elementary Foundation, $1,000 for field trips and after school programs

• Budkis Charboneau Fund, $5,000 help pay veterinarian bills for animals owned by low-income seniors

• Time Banks (Hopelink), $1,000 exploring community needs through volunteer skills for clients

• Northwest Harvest, $5,000 for their food drive

Two philanthropic organizations, Laureate Gamma Rho and Phi Beta Psi, were granted money. Phi Beta Psi was given $1,898 for their cancer research and Laureate Gamma Rho $1,802 for their service project. The two groups have provided volunteers at the Thrift Shop on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

This fall scholarships were awarded to three Lake Washington Technical College students: Emily Anne Byrne received $2,000 toward her engineering degree and Jennifer Valentine and Mariya Gavralova each received $1,000 toward their human services degree.
