Accidental falls are a leading cause of injury to older adults. An upcoming “Falls Prevention Fair” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, will bring together a variety of resources to help older adults reduce the risk of falls.

The event at the North Bellevue Community Center will offer:

Fall risk assessments from a licensed physical therapist;

Blood pressure checks and safety information from the Bellevue Fire Department;

Posture and alignment screenings from a chiropractor; and

Professional hearing and eyesight evaluations.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, falls are more than a minor hazard for older adults. They report that unintentional falls were the leading cause of injury death nationwide, resulting in nearly 20,000 fatalities in 2008 alone.

Injury from falls can also limit the ability for older adults to remain independent, an important factor in their quality of life.

The resource fair is hosted by Bellevue Aging Services and is free. For more information, contact Aging Services at 425-452-4200.
