A 10-year-old boy is in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center after being pulled from a swimming pool at an apartment complex located in the 900 block of Northup Way on Thursday, June 22. The boy was rescued from the pool after an alert neighbor saw the boy floating unresponsive in the pool and took immediate action.
The call came in around 6:45 p.m. The boy had been playing in the apartment complex pool with other kids. When they got out, he did not. A neighbor watching over the kids noticed the boy was not moving and immediately jumped into the pool to check on him.
The boy was not breathing when he was pulled from the pool. The alert neighbor began CPR and supplied life saving air to the boy until Bellevue Fire Department personnel arrived on scene. The boy appeared to have been without oxygen for only a very short period of time. There is no lifeguard that normally works at this pool and the pool as posted signs that there is no lifeguard on duty. The boy’s mother was also in the pool area at the time of the incident.
The boy was transported to Children’s Hospital by BFD Medics. They then diverted to Harborview Medical Center after the boy continued to have problems breathing.
With the warmer weather and school ending, Bellevue Police and Fire ask that parents keep a close eye on children around pools, lakes and streams. They also advise people to take basic CPR classes, noting the boy benefited from an adult who was closely watching the kids at the pool and had basic CPR training and did the right thing at the right time.
