A group of parents and educators met at the Bellevue Regional Library on Tuesday to announce the formation of Bellevue Leads, a coalition aimed at promoting excellence in Bellevue public schools.
The public was invited to learn about the coalition’s goals and values to be presented to the school board for consideration during the district’s contract negotiations currently taking place.
Bellevue Leads released its values statement after review and research around the current Bellevue contract.
Linda Mui, PTSA Council president, said that while Bellevue already has an excellent reputations for its schools, there’s always room for improvement.
“We’re putting up our guidelines, but it’s up to the parties at the bargaining table to make the final decisions,” she said.
The coalition’s platform consists of two principals: First, every student deserves effective administrators and teachers and includes recognizing and rewarding teachers with proven results in the classroom, considering teacher performance in staffing decisions (hiring, transfers, layoffs) and offering leadership opportunities and incentives other than being moved to administration.
Second, there should be an emphasis on “collaborative focus on student learning,” including parent involvement and meaningful feedback and grading for students.
“We want to know that how our students are doing is influencing the decisions being made in the district,” Mui said.
