A local grassroots group is one step closer to its goal of improving the lives of homeless individuals in the area.
Sleepless in Seattle, a nonprofit formed earlier this year, set out this fall to raise enough money to purchase a sleeping bag for every homeless person in Seattle and King County.
According to the group’s spokesperson, Eddie Wang, with the help of 500 donors, more than $75,000 was raised through an Indiegogo crowdsourcing campaign.
Wang said he was humbled by the community’s support and helping the group’s dream become a reality.
On Saturday, Dec. 13, approximately 200 volunteers are scheduled to gather at 1808 18th Ave. in Seattle where they’ll receive a brief training before being sent out as 50 groups of four to various “homeless hot spots” throughout the city and King County, Wang said.
The Sleepless in Seattle team purchased 3,500 sleeping bags of varying weight, size and temperature threshold for distribution. Any remaining sleeping bags will be given to more than 20 nonprofit partners who helped make this event possible, he said.
As part of the “Big Give” on Saturday, Wang said each team is hoping to capture the stories of those they meet in a “Humans of New York” style in order to capture a “snapshot” of the lives impacted by the event.
Although the Saturday event is the culmination of the groups efforts so far, it by no means they’re finished with their mission, he said.
Wang said the initiative isn’t about ending homelessness, but rather showing compassion and “meeting an immediate need for those in the community.”
