Guidant Financial employees have some fun

Bellevue-based Guidant Financial held it’s fifth annual Guidant Olympics this week, taking an hour out of each day Monday through Friday for the event.

This year’s games included jousting, tricycle races, a “binder toss” to celebrate the company’s move toward electronic data-keeping, and a contest to see who could build the tallest structure out of spaghetti and marshmallows.

Olympic gold and silver medalist Mary Whipple, who earned her medals as coxswain of the U.S. Rowing Team in 2008 and 2004 respectively, spoke before the event about the type of mentality it takes to succeed in highly competitive fields. She also refereed the games Monday.

The Guidant Olympics are intended to be a morale booster and a way for employees to get familiar with each other.

“It’s become the cultural event of the year for us,” said company co-founder David Nilssen.

Guidant Financial specializes in self-directed investing, serving over 7,000 clients nationwide.

The company started in 2003, and once employed around 90 people. It has since downsized to about 50 workers following the recent recession.
