The Haggen Northwest Fresh grocery store in Crossroads will close within the next six to eight weeks. A store manager confirmed plans to liquidate the Bellevue branch of the Northwest chain. A Haggen store in Shoreline also will close.
“We invested in both remodeling and rebranding, dedicating our collective resources to give these locations one last chance. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to turn these stores around,” said Clement Stevens co-president and senior vice president of marketingin a statement. “These closures enable us to free up capital and enable us to focus our efforts on our thriving stores.”
The Bellevue store was remodeled in 2011.
Haggen, begun in Bellingham in 1933 and later rebranded under several new banners including TOP Food and Drug, has undergone tough times in recent years. After hiring Bellevue consulting firm Hartman Group, the company attempted to rebrand its Bellevue store in 2011 into products geared more toward its Northwest clientele.
“Closing stores is an extremely difficult decision, knowing that it will impact some of our valued employees and their families, as well as our guests,” said Stevens, adding “We are committed to placing many of those impacted by the closures in positions at our other stores.”
Lee Weinstein, a spokesperson for the company said that there were 75 employees at the Crossroads store.
At the same time, the company is transforming many of its TOP Food & Drug stores into Haggen Northwest Fresh stores, and is examining opportunities for future growth.
The Haggen store in Bellevue is in an adjacent property to Crossroads Bellevue shopping center, which has a QFC store. A Grocery Outlet store recently opened just to the south of Crossroads. A Safeway and Fred Meyer are within a mile of the Haggen facility.
