Incumbent Jane Hague remains in the lead for King County Council District 6, but Mercer Islander Richard E. Mitchell continues to inch closer to the five-time representative.
Hague’s lead began to shrink when the second round of results came out Wednesday. As the week progressed, Mitchell’s count increased, and he now has more than 30 percent of the vote. Seattle Port Commissioner John Creighton conceded the second spot in the primary to Mitchell Friday morning on his website.
When initial totals were released last week Hague held nearly 40 percent of the vote, with the other three candidates – Mitchell, Creighton and former Bellevue Councilmember Patsi Bonincontri – looking to make up the gap.
“I feel good about this campaign,” Hague said. “People know me and can see the things I believe in – working across the aisle for solutions, standing up for the Eastside.”
Mitchell, a former counsel for Gov. Christine Gregoire, pulled away from Creighton after initial results showed only a 600-vote difference between the candidates. Reached at the Crossroads Bar and Grill Tuesday night, with a noisy crowd in the background, Mitchell said that he had no expectations about the numbers before yesterday. But he was pleased at how the campaign has gone so far.
“We have been firing on all cylinders,” he said of his campaign. “We have had the endorsements we wanted and our fundraising has gone well.”
