The Bellevue-based Seattle Humane Society is seeking extra cans of cat food or a bag of dry cat food to help fill the shelves of the society’s Pet Food Bank. The food is distributed every month to low-income elderly citizens so they don’t have to choose between self care and pet care.

The Pet Food Bank provides dry and canned food every month to more than 1,200 pets belonging to low-income seniors and people disabled by AIDS, combined. The effort helps more than 750 pet owners feed their animal companions each month.

With the downturn in the economy, the need for Pet Food Bank services has become greater than ever, society officials say. Canned cat food is our greatest need.

Anyone anyone can bring canned or dry cat food to the Pet Food Bank at the shelter at 13212 Eastgate Way in Bellevue, anytime. Also, individuals, community groups and businesses can hold pet food drives to benefit the program. Many local pet stores have in-store donation barrels for the Pet Food Bank and society officials will put a barrel with any interested business. To order a barrel, call 425-649-7566.
