The Seattle Humane Society is asking for help as its cat population has surpassed the 400 mark.

“July and August are the peaks of kitten season,” said Brenda Barnette, chief executive officer for the Seattle Humane Society. “We have the opportunity to save hundreds of lives, but we need the community’s help to adopt or foster an orphaned kitten or adult cat.”

The Seattle Humane Society is able to physically house up to 250 cats and kittens. Another 170 cats and kittens are currently in volunteer foster homes with food, medical care, and supplies being provided by the Seattle Humane Society.

The Humane Society has more than 80 kittens and cats available for adoption at any given time. The self-sufficient nature of cats makes them a good pet for those who travel or have a busy work schedule, Humane Society officials say. For those who aren’t home often, adopting two cats lets them entertain each during a person’s absence.

The Society also needs more people to foster an animal. It is considered a good volunteer project for families or individuals who love animals but cannot commit to having a full-time animal companion. Time commitment can range from one to eight weeks.
