Called Mazuma, which is Yiddish for money, offers free, 90-minute workshops for those who want to learn the key elements of retirement investment planning. Mazuma investment coaches are volunteers with experience in the financial planning field. They don’t tell people to invest in particular funds. Instead, they teach people how to make good decisions on their own.

Social Security most likely will be there in some form or the other, organizers say, but the benefit is not likely to be as generous. Also, company sponsored pension plans have given way to 401k’s, 401b’s and Simple IRA’s.

These types of plans place more responsibility on the employee to decide which mutual funds and asset allocation method to use. If a person invests too conservatively, their retirement savings are eroded by inflation. If they invest too aggressively, they could expose themselves to too much risk and lose money.

Mazuma also offers personalized consultation with experienced Investment Coaches for $45 per hour.

Senior Services was established in 1967, and is the largest non-profit agency serving seniors in Washington.
