Kayak nature tours along the shores of Lake Sammamish State Park will be offered in March by Issaquah Paddle Sports.
A professional kayak guide will lead the two-hour tour. During the tour, a state park ranger will present an on-the-water program about the Great Blue Heron. Lake Sammamish State Park hosts one of the largest heronries in the greater Seattle area with 80 to 100 Great Blue Heron nesting pairs.
In addition to the herons, participants frequently see a variety of waterfowl and raptors such as bald eagles and red-tailed hawks. Spotting scopes will be available for land-based bird viewing, but participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars to view birds from the water.
The tours will be March 7 and 27, with a morning tour from 9 a.m. to noon and an afternoon tour from 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Cost of the event is $5 per person with kayak rentals available at $10 for a single, sit-on-the-top kayak and $15 for a double, sit-on-top kayak.
Free dry suits and life vests will be provided to all participants to use on the tour. Operators advise participants to dress for the weather and wear footwear that can get wet.
Pre-registration is required. Call Issaquah Paddle Sports at 206-527-1825 or toll free at 866-306-1825.
