Man facing felony charges for ID theft, forgery | Prokopchuk allegedly stole convenience checks from mailboxes in area

Bellevue Police announced today (Monday, Jan. 26) felony charges for a man alleged to have gone on a 9-day crime spree that involved stealing convenience checks from around the area and racking up $13,000 in purchases with his ill-gotten gains.

Police report Taras Prokopchuk, 30, was charged in King County Superior Court on Friday with one count of first-degree identity theft and two counts of forgery. Prokopchuk allegedly stole convenience checks linked to credit card accounts from mailboxes in Bellevue, Redmond and Seattle, then forged and deposited them into an account for a stolen credit card in his possession, according to a police news release. Police report Prokopchuk made $13,000 in purchases with the credit card.

Prokopchuk was identified by a former school resource officer who had worked at the man’s high school and recognized him in surveillance images. Prokopchuk remains in King County Jail, with bail set at $50,000. His next court appearance is Feb. 4 at the King County Courthouse in Seattle.
