Newport High School will host the Knights of Pi Math Tournament (KPMT), a math contest for students in grades five through eight.
The event, on Saturday, Dec. 12, will raise funds to help pay for the registration fees of contests in which the math club competes. The contest has been created by the members of the math club.
In addition, the contest is designed to help local middle and elementary school students benefit through exposure to problems and topics that go beyond their standard math curriculum and to share their enjoyment of competitive mathematics with like-minded students.
Competitors will participate in a variety of tests in different formats: an individual test, a mental math test in which individuals will try to solve questions posed orally, speed math in which individuals race against the clock, and team tests (Algebra & Operations, Geometry, and Probability & Potpourri) in which teams of four students will attempt to solve 10 topic-specific problems in 15 minutes.
The structure of the tests have been adjusted by the students of the club to take into account feedback received after last year’s tests, including an all new test titled Joust! All of the tests for KPMT are written by Newport High’s math club members and will provide problems covering a range of difficulties, allowing students of all experience levels to test their skills.
So far, 13 schools have registered teams for the contest: Denny International Middle School, Eckstein Middle School, Hamilton International Middle School, Louisa May Alcott Elementary, Lowell Elementary, Northwest Chinese School, Odle Middle School, Redmond Junior High School, Samantha Smith Elementary, Seattle Girls’ School, Stevenson Elementary School, The Bear Creek School, and Tyee Middle School. Late registration is still open for KPMT for the price of $48 per team of four students. Those interested can visit visit the club’s website.
Because this contest is a fundraiser for the Newport High School math team, donations of money, time, goods, or services by local businesses and individuals are also being sought. Those interested can contact the club.
