No one injured when flare erupts at Bellevue Goodwill

No one was injured when a flare gun that had mistakenly been placed on the salesfloor at the Bellevue Goodwill detonated Sunday afternoon.

A shopper reportedly discovered a package of several hand flares on a shelf in the business on Northeast 20th Street. While examining them, one flare was activated and shot upwards, eliciting a large boom and some sparks, according to an eyewitness.

A Goodwill of Seattle spokesperson confirmed the incident and told the Reporter that it was placed on the shelves by mistake.

“Sometimes we can’t control what people donate to us, but if we have something hazardous, we wouldn’t put it out on the floor… I understand that the packaging was much different than traditional flare packaging. It was a mistake,” said Goodwill spokesperson Katherine Boury. The company is taking the incident very seriously and reviewing their safety procedures, she added.
