Note to Seniors: Volunteer for your Health

Research shows that people who volunteer on a regular basis are less likely to suffer from heart disease or depression, visit the doctor/hospital less often and live over a year longer than non-volunteers.

As a volunteer you can share your experience, learn new skills, explore your creativity, develop new social networks and enjoy a sense of achievement while keeping yourself mentally and physically active.

Volunteer opportunities for seniors don’t have to require a long commitment. Whether you have a few hours a month or desire a full-time commitment, the perfect position exists for you. In fact, many organizations and agencies in Bellevue and the Eastside could use your help now.

The North Bellevue Community Center, located off 148th in Bellevue, offers many programs for the senior community — and relies on volunteers to make these programs happen. For information, contact Darrion Spratley at 425-452-7681.

Helpers are welcome at the Bellevue Botanical Garden. Volunteers can direct traffic or people, answer questions for visitors/guests, assist staff in the gardens or work in the gift shop. As a Garden d’Lights volunteer you can be a key part of this popular holiday event. Call Lisa Scott at 425-452-2750 for details.

There are opportunities to serve on a city Board or Commission — anything from the Arts Commission to the Youth Link Board to the Bellevue Network on Aging. Call the City Clerk’s Office at 425-452-6466 or view the city website for details.

Many Eastside organizations offer vibrant volunteer opportunities including KidsQuest Children’s Museum, the Bellevue School District VIBES Tutoring Program or HopeLink. You can serve others in need through the King County’s Senior Services programs, King County Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, Meals on Wheels, Elder and Adult Day Services, Evergreen Hospice and Palliative Care Program, as well as, numerous religious, service or cultural organizations.

For more information on volunteer opportunities, contact the Bellevue Network on Aging at 425-452-7681 (this routes you to North Bellevue Community Center) or Shelly Shellabarger with Bellevue Volunteer Program at 425-452-5375.
