Crews installing new Smarter Highways electronic signs will close eastbound Interstate 90 at the Mount Baker Tunnel in Seattle three nights next week.

Drivers can expect the following overnight closures on Feb. 21 and 23-24 while crews install signs above the roadway:

At 7 p.m. crews will begin closing lanes on eastbound I-90 between I-5 and the Mount Baker Tunnel.

At 9 p.m. crews will close the on-ramps from northbound I-5 and both directions of Rainier Avenue S to eastbound I-90.

At 11 p.m. crews will shift all eastbound I-90 traffic between I-5 at the Mount Baker Tunnel to the express lanes.

All eastbound lanes of I-90 and the on-ramps from Rainier Avenue S will reopen by 4 a.m. The on-ramp from northbound I-5 will reopen by 5 a.m.

During the closures drivers from northbound I-5 and Rainier Avenue S will be detoured to South Dearborn Street and then to 4th Avenue South to eastbound I-90. Drivers accessing eastbound I-90 from Mercer Island will not be affected by the closures.

Crews will make the same closures overnight on Monday, Feb. 28.

WSDOT plans to activate the new Smarter Highways signs on I-90 later this year. The signs will alert drivers to reduce their speed or change lanes when there are collisions or backups on the road ahead.
