Park, community center combats crime in Crossroads | Heritage Corner

In the 1970s, the Crossroads neighborhood had a reputation for crime, especially juvenile delinquency. As a response to this problem, the City of Bellevue decided to construct a park and community center in the area, and in 1978 the city bought the 27-acre Village Green Golf Course for about $2 million.

Despite a certain amount of pushback from local golfers, the parks department reduced the golf course to nine holes and erected a community center and gymnasium on the property. Construction started in 1980, and the center opened in May of 1981.

Since that time the community center has continually provided a variety of classes and structured activities. Park features have grown to include jogging trails, a picnic area, basketball and tennis courts, and the nine-hole golf course.

In more recent years, the Crossroads Skate Bowl opened in the park in 2006, and Youth Eastside Services (YES) opened a new headquarters building there in 2008. At about the same time, the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club raised funds to construct a water spray playground for young children.
