The Boys and Girls Club of Bellevue recognized two Bellevue residents during its Youth of the Year awards banquet on Feb. 11.
Paula Cruz, 16, was named Youth of the Year and Olivia Mack, 10, was named Junior Youth of the Year.
The awards promote and recognize service, academic performance, and contributions to family and spiritual life.
Sen. Rodney Tom, D-Medina, sponsored Arlen Hughes as a Senate page. Arlen, a 14-year-old from Bellevue, is a student at Chinook Middle School.
Arlen enjoys playing soccer and his favorite classes are Math and Japanese. Arlen is a Star Rank in Boy Scout Troop 430.
Jackie Otto has been named to the chancellor’s list at Chapman University in Orange, Calif. Jackie graduated from Interlake High School In June 2008 as a full IB Diploma Candidate. Her English professor at Chapman noticed her well-developed writing skills and submitted a couple of her writings to a student literary journal. Jackie’s was picked and is in the current issue of “New Comm Ave”, Spring 2009, volume 2. (which is also available online).
Seven students from the Bellevue area have been named to the dean’s list at Eastern Washington University. Named are Amanda Lucas, Bellevue; Allison Lyons, Bellevue; Catherine Garrow, Sammamish; Derrick Brito, Newport; Lindsay Gothmann, Newport; Timothy Martinell, Sammamish and Arash Ranjbaran, Sammamish.
Win Mason, 17, of Bellevue, is one of 24 youths nationwide who have won admittance to the Civic Leadership Academy, a week-long program in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol. Mason is a cadet captain in CAP at the Overlake Squadron, and a junior at Newport High School. He is among the top five percent of all CAP cadets nationwide.
During the week of February 21-28, Mason will discuss international affairs with Foreign Service officers at the State Department and learn about the legislative process.
