A plan for putting tolls on HOT lanes on I-405 got a cold reception from the Legislature. A bill – House Bill 2941 – failed to come up for a Senate floor vote in time to meet a Friday deadline.

The bill had been approved by the House and the Senate Transportation Committee. It was designed to put tolls on two HOT lanes in order to help reduce congestion. The state is experimenting with such a project on Highway 167 between Auburn and Renton.

Rep. Judy Clibborn, D-Mercer Island, the prime sponsor of the bill and also chairwoman of the House Transportation Committee, said another effort would be made next year.

Single-occupancy drivers are allowed to use HOT lanes by paying a fee that increases or decreases with congestion. Multiple-occupancy vehicles are allowed to use HOT lanes for free, as they are HOV lanes.
